One of the teachers insisted on having his picture taken with portraits of Hafez Assad(top)and Bashar Assad (middle). I was happy to oblige. Hafez Assade, a Baath party member, ruled Syria from 1970 until June, 2000 when he died of heart failure. His 34-year-old son Bashar became the president after the Syrian parliament lowered the age requirement for the presidency. A side note: Bashar is an ophthalmologist, and his sister Bushra has a Ph.D. in Pharmacy. |
